Another explorer tour from Crookham travel –

Now in our 41st YEAR!

A LITTLE CLOSER TO HOME

It seems true than many of us overlook attractions near to home whilst reaching out to visit places further away. The city and country of Luxembourg definitely falls into this category. After a recent personal trip there it was obvious that the very different breweries visited coupled with the interesting rail system (especially suburban lines which penetrate into France) and the opening of its new tram route, not to mention a nice narrow gauge set up, that all this adds up to a great destination for an Explorer tour. Eurostar bookings have already been registered for a group at the cheapest fare, the breweries have already confirmed, so here we are opening bookings for this pleasantly easy journey to the (not very) Big L. So, please read on and whet your appetite for the beer, the visits, the two-level capital which has a huge gorge sheltering the old town in its midst, plus the new tram line and its new high-capacity funicular which is integral to the transport interchange.

new tram.jpglogo1.gifTHURSDAY 16TH AUGUST 2018

Departure from London St. Pancras will be by the 10:58 Eurostar to Bruxelles due 14:05 where we change for the 14:33 SNCB IC train to Luxembourg due 17:40. An easy 20 minute bus ride is then required to reach our hotel near the airport **. An evening meal will be provided in the hotel at 19:15. Should you wish to fly, there are several flights daily from London City airport at rates usually higher than by rail. Other airports are available.

FRIDAY 17TH AUGUST

Public Transport is excellent in this state and the authorities have a plan to get a large number of residents out of their cars in the coming years. You will see many work sites for expanded railways and work on the extension of the tram route. Buses are very frequent and a day ticket for all transport is just €4. The first full day here will begin with the bus to the city centre for a local train at xx:22 and xx:52, 18 minutes to Bascharge with same level interchange for a bus (3,13,14,15) five stops to our first beer and brewery visit of the day. This commences at 11:00 at the (not so) microbrewery Beierhaascht, situated in the complex which includes a hotel, restaurant and a fascinating butcher’s shop! A light lunch will be taken here.

The afternoon event begins at 15:00 with a tour–with-a-difference at the family-owned Bofferding Brewery. This takes about one hour providing insights that we rarely see in the UK, followed by up to seven beer tastings. Return to the city is at your leisure by direct bus or bus and train.

SATURDAY 18th AUGUST

logo.pngDown in the gorge, in the old city, is one of Luxembourg’s former large breweries’ estate which has undergone major regeneration. This now includes a huge Bavarian beer hall (complete with not one but two preserved static steam engines. In the former main buildings of Mousel now is a historic restaurant and bars; next door is the current version of their brewery, Clausen ales. We shall have a brief visit to the brewery and a huge 4-meats seated buffet lunch, along with a litre of beer.

photo1page1.jpgSUNDAY 19th AUGUST

Today will include a thorough visit to the narrow gauge train 1900 www.train1900.lu and Minett Park Fond-de-Gras system www.minettpark.lu which uses vintage steam, diesel and electric traction www.miniersbunn.lu. A special train is being investigated for Sunday morning, leaving the afternoon for the city’s new tram and funicular to be explored. Pubs in Luxembourg tend to use Sunday as it’s meant to be and open bars may be hard to find so an optional evening meal in a very good and reasonable restaurant (with alcohol) will be arranged; food at your own cost.

MONDAY 20th AUGUST

With our evening departure by Eurostar, the day will be available to you until 15:00. The railway-minded may like to ride the railway “Square” with two branches - suburban lines often still with late 20th century rolling stock. For everyone both levels of this city beckon. A manned left luggage office is at the rail station. The train back to Brussels departs at 15:20, arriving Midi 18:27, then perhaps time for a quickie before check-in for the 19:52 Eurostar back to London due 21:03 where this tour terminates.

Note ** In paragraph Thursday: Hotel capacity is very tight on weekdays in Luxembourg city and groups are generally not taken as a result and city hotel rooms are certainly expensive. The population is one of the highest taxpayers in Europe but cost of food and drink is still reasonable, with VAT at just 3%. The best value option for us is at the NH hotel near the airport and just a 20 minute efficient bus ride from the station, included in the transport zone.
