ANTWERP – THE HEART OF BELGIUM’S BEER SCENE

We have chosen a very popular and historic city somewhat closer to home for our 16th pre-Xmas tour, now more aptly called an Advent Adventure. We have been very fortunate to find a Eurostar “consultant” who found that he could offer tickets to Brussels on the mid-morning now non-stop service to the Belgium capital which continues to Amsterdam. These trains are meant to bolster the business to the Netherlands and do not appear on any search for Brussels trains on line. Whilst retaining the usual stalwarts of a Sunday Tram tour and visits (on this tour more than usual) given the plethora of attractive and traditional beer-related activities, plus shopping attractions to enjoy as you find your around our base city, we shall have a coach to visit a number of interesting out-of-town breweries.

THURSDAY 5TH DECEMBER 2019

Having assembled at the Eurostar entrance by 10:15 we shall travel from St. Pancras International at 11:04 direct to Brussels where we change for a local Inter-City train to Antwerp at 14:26 due 15:24. It is just a short walk through the subways and lift or escalators to reach the Century Hotel, our base for four nights bed and breakfast. It has one of the main restaurant streets just around the corner where you could begin your Belgian Beer experience or stroll further along into the old town.

FRIDAY 6th DECEMBER

Today will see us travelling by coach to three specialist breweries with a stop on the way back at a newer
kid on the block. Our coach will leave from nearby the hotel at 09:20, first heading south-east for a visit to the Het Anker brewery who can trace their brewing roots back to 1471. Around two hours here allows for the leisurely tour followed by beer tasting. A Belgian snack (pre-ordered choice) as a light lunch will be taken here. Then we head west to meet our appointment at 13:00 at the Malheur brewery with a family tradition of brewing going back to the late 18th Century. The third visit today at 16:00 will be to the Duvel Moortgat brewery, one of the most important breweries not just in Belgium but also Europe – brewing since 1833, they produce some of Belgian’s best known beers. After this, we are planning to take the coach to the outskirts of Antwerp for a session at the Pakhuis brewery. You may spend as much time as you wish here as the return to the hotel will be by tram or Metro (19-24 minutes), or you may well wander back finding more bars en route. The AVB will have all the info!

SATURDAY 7th DECEMBER

The day will begin by leaving the hotel at 10:00 for a group visit at 10:30 to the new De Koninck brewery experience, claimed to be a brewery visit like no other. It is a walk-through visit lasting about 90 minutes including the tasting in the old brewhouse. Then we shall cross the city by tram to the regenerated docklands area to visit the Antwerp Brewing Co., after which your day will be free for more exploration.

SUNDAY 8th DECEMBER

We are pleased to be able to confirm a private tour on a preserved tram (built in 1931) for the usual morning tour of the city by some routes – and curves – which thread their ways through the narrow streets of this attractive city. The Xmas markets open today at 12 noon.

MONDAY 9th DECEMBER

Your time is then free to enjoy another bar or two (Xmas markets open at 12 noon) until we have to leave by the 15:55 IC train from platform 23 to Brussels Midi arr.16:45. Then we cross the station concourse to possibly have a final drink before check-in at the appropriate time for the 18:56 Eurostar to London St. Pancras due 19:57 where the tour terminates.
